Ōpōtiki floor level survey

Regional Council’s survey team will be doing a floor level survey across Ōpōtiki township and surrounding areas during August. The survey will help improve understanding of natural hazard risks, including flooding, and support future planning for the community.

Understanding flood risk in Opotiki

Ōpōtiki township is located between two major rivers, making it more vulnerable to flooding and other natural hazards.

As weather patterns continue to change over time, it is important that councils have good information to help plan for the future and make informed decisions about infrastructure, emergency management, and community resilience.

Why is the survey being done

The survey is one of several projects underway to help build a clearer picture of flood risk across the township.

Good information helps councils make better decisions about flood protection, infrastructure, emergency management and community resilience.

Importantly, this survey is to only collect information. It doesn’t mean changes are being proposed for individual properties and it will not affect rates, insurance or property ownership.

Which properties are being surveyed?

The survey is being carried out for all properties within the Ōpōtiki township, Ōpōtiki East alongside the Otara River, lower Woodlands and Kukumoa.

What is a floor level survey?

Floor level surveys measure the height of building floors relative to surrounding ground levels and survey information.

How long will each survey take?

In most cases, the survey will take approximately five to ten minutes per property.

Will the survey affect rates?

No. The survey is being undertaken to collect information and improve understanding of flood risk. It does not affect rates.

Will the survey affect insurance?

No. The survey itself does not affect insurance arrangements. The information collected will be used to help inform future risk assessments and planning activities.
