Rules for on-site wastewater systems

For properties where there is no wastewater connection at the boundary, such as in many rural communities, wastewater must be treated using an on-site system. The On-Site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan (OSET Plan) sets the rules for how household wastewater must be treated and disposed of to protect water quality in the Bay of Plenty.

Most property owners who need an on-site wastewater system, use a septic tank system with a soakage bed or trenches. However, in some situations, you may choose (or be required) to install an Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) instead. This provides a higher level of treatment and helps protect nearby waterways from contamination.

Many systems are permitted

You don’t need resource consent if your on-site wastewater system meets the relevant permitted activity rules set out in the On-Site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan. The rules depend on the type of system, where you live, and whether the system is existing, new, upgraded or being replaced. If your system doesn’t meet the rules, you must apply for resource consent.
