Buyers, sellers and solicitors FAQs

When you buy or sell a property, your lawyer manages the process, including ensuring that all rates are requested and paid as part of settlement.

They will:

  • Obtain rates information from both your local council and Regional Council
  • Ensure any outstanding rates are cleared at settlement
  • Manage any credits, refunds, or adjustments through the settlement process
  • Arrange for ownership changes to be registered with Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), which are then processed by your local council and shared with us

Regional Council does not manage the sale process or settlement arrangements. If there are any issues with payments or adjustments, these need to be resolved through your lawyer.

If something doesn’t seem correct after buying or selling a property, it is usually due to timing or processing delays between councils and LINZ.

You should:

  • Contact your lawyer first if the issue relates to settlement payments or adjustments
  • Contact us if you need to:
    • Check ownership details have been updated
    • Confirm your contact details for future rates notices
    • Query an invoice you received after selling

We can help check your account, but we don’t hold settlement details or agreements between buyers and sellers.
